Story
There are some people who leave a trail of light behind them, not because they shout the loudest or take up the most space—but because they live with such love, generosity, and sincerity that they touch everyone around them. Alicja Stefanowicz was one of those people. Hers was a life built on kindness, on laughter, on fierce love for her family, and on the smallest of gestures that, in truth, meant everything.
Alicja was born in the town of Jastrzębie-Zdrój, in the south of Poland, close to the border with Czechia. She was the beloved daughter of Edward and Lucja, and the cherished sister of Wojtek.
Education was always important to Alicja. After finishing school, she went on to study at WSB University, where she qualified as an accountant. She was bright and determined, and she worked in Poland as an accountant, proud of the profession she had worked hard to enter. Numbers came easily to her, and so did hard work.
But Alicja’s life changed forever one night, in the kind of story that could only have happened to her. She met a young man named Bartek in a club, and rather than waiting to be approached, she marched right over and asked him for a cigarette. That was it. That was the spark. From that moment on, their story together began.
They married in 2005 and built a life full of love, laughter, and music. And although the road to becoming parents wasn’t easy—they spent two long years trying for a baby, undergoing treatment and holding onto hope—they were eventually blessed with their greatest joy: Damian, born in 2012. For Alicja, Damian was the centre of her world. She used to say he was the most handsome and the smartest boy—and anyone who knew her would agree that she said it not just with pride, but with a lioness’s protective love.
Damian, with his quick mind for maths and the confidence to zip around on his scooter chased by the girls, was everything to her. She saw in him the best of both herself and Bartek—his intelligence, his humour, and that spark of something special. She would have done anything for him. She did do everything for him.
Alicja and Bartek’s little family wasn’t quite complete until a fluffy Shih-Tzu called Yuki joined the crew. Alicja had always wanted a dog, and when they got Yuki from Poland, it was like another dream had come true. Damian, of course, wanted a cat—and got one. A fast little creature who was always darting off somewhere, and so it earned the name Sonic. Their house in Goldthorpe, where they finally settled after living in Coventry and Swindon, was full of life, love, and that perfect kind of chaos.
When Alicja moved to the UK in 2015, she brought with her not just her suitcase but her warmth and resilience. She took jobs at Greggs, Next, and Aldi—not glamorous roles, but roles she threw herself into with that same work ethic and kindness she’d always had. At Aldi in particular, she became known for her generosity of spirit.
There was one man—a homeless man—who often sat outside the shop. While many passed him by, Alicja didn’t. She brought him Bartek’s old shoes, gave him bread and drinks, and over time they formed a sort of friendship. In return, he would help her with putting the flower displays away at the end of the day. These were the things that made Alicja special. She didn’t just see people—she really saw them. She noticed when someone on the street was struggling with low blood sugar, and while others ignored him, she stopped, helped, and got him food and drink. She once drove two hours to help her friend Natalia when she needed someone. She was always the one picking up the phone, reaching out, showing up.
She loved to give gifts. Not just at birthdays or Christmas, but all the time. She loved the feeling of making people smile. That was her joy.
When she wasn’t helping others, Alicja loved to relax with a good book or a crime series—especially the ones on Netflix. She devoured stories, got lost in them. And music—oh, music was a huge part of her life. Her heart belonged to rock and grunge. She loved Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and perhaps surprisingly, had a real soft spot for Robbie Williams. In 2003, she wanted to go and see him in concert, but he didn’t go to Poland, so Bartek got her the DVD. She listened to it on full volume all the time.
There’s a story Bartek tells—he was coming off a late shift one night after 10pm, and as he got closer to home, he could hear music booming down the street. When he recognised it was Robbie Williams, he knew it could only be one person. There she was, playing it as loud as the speakers would go. That was Alicja—passionate, joyful, and unbothered by what anyone else thought.
She shared that love of music with Bartek. They would sit and watch music videos on YouTube together, and one year, she surprised him with a ticket to see Metallica at a festival in Warsaw. It was just another way she showed her love—not with grand speeches, but with thoughtful gestures that came straight from the heart.
Her happy place was always by the sea. When they lived in Swindon, they would often pack up and head to Devon or Cornwall, especially to her favourite spot: Newquay. She didn’t care if it rained. One time they arrived at the beach under grey skies and she insisted they stay. Sure enough, an hour later the sun came out, and they stayed until 8pm, soaking up every moment. Later, when they moved up north, the east coast became their go-to—Skegness, in particular. But she also loved Bournemouth, Durdle Door, Woolacombe… anywhere there was the sound of waves and the smell of salt in the air.
She was a football fan too, following Arsenal and Barcelona. Bartek, being a Manchester United fan, had to endure a bit of banter whenever those teams clashed. When he was at work, Alicja would send him match updates over text so he didn’t miss anything. She never quite understood Damian’s love of Formula 1, though. That was one thing she could never get her head around.
There’s no denying that Alicja was trusting—sometimes a little too much so. She believed in people, often before they had the chance to prove themselves. And yes, at times, that meant she was hurt. But she never let that stop her being kind. Her heart remained open, even when the world didn’t always deserve it.
What stands out about Alicja’s life isn’t fame or fortune. It’s something much rarer and far more beautiful. It’s how she lived with such sincerity. How she was fiercely loyal to her family, endlessly generous with her friends, and full of the kind of joy that you couldn’t help but be drawn to.
She was the kind of woman who remembered the little things. Who would drop everything for someone she loved. Who adored her son, treasured her husband, and filled her home with music, laughter, and light.
In Damian, she saw a reflection of her hopes and dreams, and she was so very proud of the young man he is becoming. In Bartek, she found not just a partner but a soulmate. And to all those lucky enough to call her a friend, she was a true gift.
Alicja Stefanowicz may no longer be here in person, but her love lives on. In the music that still plays in their home. In the footsteps Damian takes, every bit as clever and full of life as his mum. In the memories of sun-soaked beaches and late-night drives, and in every act of kindness inspired by the way she lived her life.
She was a light, and that light remains.
